People
and wildlife
Peoples enjoyment of wildlife sites and nature reserves is
dependent to a large degree on the access facilities provided.
Creating a balance where people feel they have good access
and the wildlife is adequately protected is not always easy.
If to walk round a site is a positive experience in itself
and if visitors feel close to the wildlife whilst the wildlife
suffers minimal disturbance the balance is about right.
Walking
in the Cromford area of the Peak District.
Not only are physical access facilities,
such as bird hides, important but so is the knowledge
visitors can gain about the value of the site and the species
it supports. This latter can be gained through interpretation
material available both on site and off site and through guided
walks and talks.
Involvement of local people in
the running and the management of the site will also improve
the way visitors feel about the site and increase their sense
of ownership and enjoyment as will the use of the site for
education activities by local schools.
