This page is designed to answer some of the most basic questions about the
GSI3D Research Consortium and the software. If you need technical information
please refer to the Technical FAQ.
- How do I join the consortium?
Anyone can join the GSI3D Research Consortium by paying a one-off joining fee
plus an annual membership fee. The amount you pay will depend on your type of
organisation or student status, and upon whether you wish to undertake
3D modelling work of a commercial nature. For more details, see the consortium pages.
- What is the demonstrator version of GSI3D?
The demonstrator version of GSI3D is free to download and install for evaluation purposes and is functional, but the amount of data that can be entered or loaded into
the project workspace is limited to ten cross sections and five geological units and the project files are encrypted and cannot be shared.
- Can I get a trial license for GSI3D?
Yes, trial licenses are available on request. Before requesting a trial license you may wish to
install the software and evaluate the features available in the demonstrator (demo) version first.
- What do I get if I join the consortium?
The full, unrestricted version of the GSI3D software tool and documentation on the associated modelling methodology; access to a helpdesk and
to community events; free software updates as they become available; access to additional documentation and sample data as it becomes available.
- What will my money pay for?
The consortium membership pricing has been designed to allow a reasonable
level of income for continuing development and support of GSI3D, on a not-for-profit basis. The money
that you pay to be a member of the consortium will go towards further
development of the software and the modelling methodology for the benefit
of everyone. It will also go towards the administration of community
benefits such as this website, documentation, the e-mail helpdesk
and user conferences.
- What is an "activation"?
An activation is a licensing mechanism which unlocks the Demo version of GSI3D so that more functions can be used.
Activations are granted
either as part of a software Trial License or, more commonly, a Full License as part of a Research Consortium subscription. Each activation unlocks the software
on a single physical computer for the currently logged-in username. For example, for a single user to activate the software on two computers (e.g. a desktop and a
laptop) would require two activations. Similarly, two individual users using a single computer would also require two activations.
- Is there a server licensing option available
No, currently there is no flexible server based licensing mechanism available for GSI3D. However the development team is aware of a need for this and will are considering this development for the future.
- What should I do if I have a problem installing or activating the software?
Please refer to the Technical FAQ.
- When will the fault modelling version of GSI3D be made available?
The fault-capable version of GSI3D is still in development and testing. We will release the faulted
version of GSI3D to the community as soon as practical,
following a final stage of development and testing. We expect this to be some time
in 2012. If you are interested in trialling a pre-release version of GSI3D with
fault modelling capability, or with new user interface and data management tools then please let us know by e-mailing the helpdesk using the address provided with your documentation.
We will contact you with details as soon as a Beta version is available.
- What should I do if I have a problem with using the software that is not covered by the FAQs?
First make sure to check the Technical FAQ page for a solution.
If you are a consortium member and experience a problem with using the software please contact
the helpdesk via e-mail using the address provided with your documentation. In some versions of the software the
helpdesk email address is displayed under the Help menu within the GSI3D software.
- What should I do if I have lost the helpdesk e-mail address?
If you are a consortium member please contact the enquiries team.
