The GSNI has always acted as a source of geological information and advice to both professional customers and the general public. Local people and visitors to these shores have always appreciated the beauty of our landscape, but in recent years they have had an increasing desire to understand how this landscape has been formed. The GSNI has initiated a number of projects aimed at revealing the secrets of the geological background to the scenic landscape. In a cross-border initiative, the GSNI and the Geological Survey of Ireland have worked together on a number of projects since 1995 aimed at promoting landscape tourism in the northern counties of Ireland. The surveys are also keen to develop the public understanding of geology as a science, and to increase the awareness of the role of geology and natural resources in society. Our geologists are working with local communities, giving talks, leading field trips and producing attractive non-technical publications.

Knockmore Most recently the GSNI and the GSI have, with the support of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Bord Failte, started a specialist marketing project which aims to promote landscape tourism in the twelve northern counties of Ireland (i.e. Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Derry, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Leitrim, Louth, Monaghan, Sligo and Tyrone). The project is primarily funded by the EU Special Support Programme for Peace and Reconciliation and INTERREG programmes supported by contributions from local authorities throughout the region. Both EU programmes support cross-border initiatives aimed at encouraging economic development throughout Northern Ireland and the border counties.
The publications from these collaborative projects are being published under the Landscapes from Stone logo. Maps and guides bearing this logo should appeal to anyone with an interest in the landscapes of Ireland.

For more information about this collaborative venture and  publications covering other regions of Ireland, visit the Geological Survey of Ireland's Landscape Tourism web page.
