16th Extractive Industry Geology conference (EIG)
8th – 11th September 2010
University of Portsmouth
Portsmouth

The 16th Extractive Industry Geology conference (EIG), hosted this year by the University of Portsmouth's, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences was held from 8th to 11th September 2010. It was supported by Tarmac, SRK Consulting, Lafarge and the Mineral Planning Association.

The EIG conference is now firmly established as the principal event for sharing knowledge, scientific research and good practice in the field of applied geology within the UK minerals industry. It brings together extractive industry, academia, consultancy and other interest groups.

The conference had seven themes focusing on Energy and Carbon Footprint Issues in the Minerals Industry, Geohazards and Geotechnics, The Regulatory Burden on Mineral Extraction, Military Applications for Extractive Industry Geology, Quarry Restoration & Sustainability, Resources and Reserves and Innovation.

Field trips to Michelmersh Brick Works and Quarry, Brightling Gypsum Mine and an Isle of Wight day tour of classic & applied geology sites; conference reception at Spinnaker Tower and conference dinner on board the HMS Warrior all made for an excellent and memorable event.

Despite the recent economic downturn, the conference was well attended (over 175 delegates), with fifteen trade stands including BGS and The Geological Society. Further information can be found on the EIG website: www.eigconference.org.
