BGS and the University of Edinburgh will host the Frontiers of Seismology meeting from 2-3 April 2009 to discuss the future of earthquake and exploration seismology in the UK.
The aim of the meeting is to bring together earthquake and exploration seismologists, and those working in related fields such as seismic hazard, crustal deformation and seismic imaging. In addition to hearing about latest discoveries, we will hold sessions to discuss the aims and objectives of the UK seismological community over the next ten years, and to plan and initiate programmes of coordinated action.
The website (
www.quakes.bgs.ac.uk/seis09/ ) is now open for pre-registration. Questions and further information may be addressed to the organisers at seis09@bgs.ac.uk.

Examining China's potential for carbon capture and storage; a technology that seeks to bury CO2 from power stations in rock formations deep below the surface. CO2 storage may be a very important option to minimising China's CO2 emissions where coal is used to generate electricity, which is essential to China s growing economy. With carbon capture and storage, China can maintain energy supplies at the same time as reducing its emissions.
BGS will host experts from China and the EU who will discuss the technical assessments of storage potential from the COACH (Cooperation Action within Carbon Capture and Storage China-EU) and NZEC (Near Zero Emissions from Coal, www.nzec.info) projects, as well as other relevant European projects.
