Potential environmental effects of CO2 leakage in the marine and terrestrial environment: Understanding monitoring mitigation

A free one-day meeting that will help:

identify the current state of R& D concerning potential CO2 leakage in the marine and terrestrial environment
identify the issues and gaps in current research
identify what needs to be done to address these gaps
produce a report to highlight some of the areas of research that may require further investigation before CCS is deployed commercially

Leaping into SuDS (sustainable drainage systems) | 29 Feb | Keyworth, Nottingham

The enactment of the Floods and Water Management Act seems a long time ago, but the hard work starts in earnest when Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are implemented through the SuDS National Standards in 2012.

This seminar will provide an update on the latest legislative changes and discuss the implications for developers, practitioners and local authorities alike. It will focus on the practicalities of putting the new policy into practice and the challenges which lie ahead. Drawing on the experience of successful case studies and support tools, potential solutions and new ways of working will be discussed and developed.

This seminar will also highlight the new technical resources that CIRIA and BGS are providing and it will give you the opportunity to voice your opinions on the resources that would help facilitate SuDS implementation.

This event is organised jointly by the Modern Built Environment and Environmental Sustainability Knowledge Transfer Networks, the British Geological Survey and CIRIA. It will provide a platform for high profile speakers, whilst allowing delegates to contribute to discussions via two breakout sessions on the challenges that lie ahead and the solutions that have already been realised.

The UK needs to embrace technological innovations to meet future demand for safe, efficient operation of transport networks and infrastructure where engineered earthworks are threatened by climate change, ageing and increased operational stresses. Key challenges include reduction of lifetime costs of infrastructure using adaptive maintenance strategies underpinned by intelligent asset monitoring systems.

What role does proactive monitoring play in the adaptation of a truly resilient network? At this event the British Geological Survey (BGS), ITM-Soil Ltd. and Geotechnical Observations Ltd. will showcase latest and emerging technologies with the potential to provide near real-time information on asset condition to support development of future maintenance strategies. The chairman of the Geotechnical Asset Owners Forum (GAOF) will present their perspective on this issue and you will have the opportunity to discuss your needs and approaches to survey and monitoring.

This workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to exchange knowledge and ideas in an informal way, to understand the challenges facing infrastructure stakeholders and the opportunities presented by these latest innovations.

The BGS's annual Fossil and Rock Show will be back at Keyworth for National Science & Engineering Week in our completely refurbished venue. The Fossil and Rock Show is aimed at primary schools teaching Key Stage 2 and is particularly suitable for Years 5 and 6. Schools wishing to attend should book in advance by Friday 9 December using the online form.
