BGS University Funding Initiative (BUFI)
The BGS directly funds university collaboration via BUFI. Our principal aim is to encourage and fund science at the PhD level. At present we have around 60 PhD students on our books who are based at about 40 UK universities.
We also provide small grants to undergraduate and graduate students for MSci/MSc-style studies and support a few international scientific experiments.
Our students study a wide range of topics, reflecting the broad scope of BGS interests–research. Subjects vary from:
- geological aspects of human health
- ice sheet evolution
- magmatic processes
- ostracod palaeontology
- seismology
Research is not restricted to the UK. We support graduate research projects with field areas in the Caribbean, Pakistan, Cyprus, and the Canaries.
We have also started initiatives towards cross Research Councils UK collaboration with projects looking at space weather and the carbon footprint associated with the London 2012 Olympic Games development.
