Geoscience technologies

Spatial geoscience visualisation Activities within the geoscience technologies theme integrate research and development across technologies that provide key observations and help us to build and populate 3D and 4D models. These technologies include

  • satellite and airborne remote sensing
  • ground-based geophysical measurements
  • software modules, workflows, standards and best practice guidance, developed to underpin digital geological modelling and mapping

Digital field data capture has replaced the geologists notebook and field slip; recent advances in wireless telemetry permit the observation and monitoring of temporal earth processes which could not previously be captured by repeat manual surveys; and immersive visualisation brings the geologists' field areas into their office to greatly improve our understanding of complex earth systems. All of these technologies deliver efficiency gains. They maximise the scientific return from valuable time spent in the field, help standardise data gathering operations and support the visualisation and fusion of complex geoscience datasets.
