BGS has developed an extensive knowledge of UK sedimentary basins and the occurrence of hydrocarbons, primarily through working with BERR (Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform), previously DTI, and we continue to provide geological advice on the UK hydrocarbon resources. We have developed our skills and applied them to other geographical areas, for example by providing similar geological and licensing advice to the Falkland Islands Government. Last year we worked in partnership with AUPEC to complete a World Bank project to assist the Government of Sao Tomé and Principe to develop their hydrocarbon potential. BGS is also a partner in the Southern Permian Basin Atlas project, which will produce a major analysis of the Permian Basin which extends from Britain to Poland.
