The Overseas Division began as part of the Imperial Institute before becoming the Colonial Geological Surveys in 1947 and the Overseas Geological Surveys (OGS) in 1957. As a result of the Brunrett Committee report of 1964 the OGS was merged with the Geological Survey of Great Britain in 1965 to form the Institute of Geological Sciences (IGS) as part of the new Natural Environment Research Council. The Overseas Division at first consisted of the Special Surveys Unit and the Photogeology Unit under the overall direction of John Pallister.

The files relating to countries have been numbered and arranged using an adaptation of the IGS filing system. The files relating to countries were given a prefix 1006 and this was followed by a number relating to a specific country e.g. 1006/2 referred to Argentina and 1006/86 to Zimbabwe. This put the countries, more or less, in alphabetical order. The new numbering system has removed the 1006 but kept the specific country number. Some changes have been made e.g. in the IGS system Oman was given the number 59B but this appears to have been an error and has been changed to 58B. Files have then been divided into sub-series e.g. IGS/OD/8/1 relates to General Correspondence on Bolivia, IGS/OD/8/2 to Photogeology and IGS/OD/8/3 to specific projects. Gaps in the numbering reflect gaps in the original IGS system. The original file numbers are shown in square brackets e.g. [1006/21/c]. The BGS7 numbers for individual countries e.g. BGS7/8740 for Argentina were taken from the first 4 digits of the geographical codes used in Geosaurus : Geosystems' thesaurus of geoscience (5th edition, 1989).
