Sydney Herbert Shaw

Shaw was born in Swansea on 6 November 1903. He gained two First class honours degrees in mining and mining geology at the Royal School of Mines in 1926. He worked for the Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey (1928–1930), lectured at Birmingham University (1932–1937) and was Government Geologist in Palestine (1937–1948). He set up the Photogeological Unit of the Colonial Overseas Surveys and became Director of the Overseas Geological Surveys in 1959. When the OGS became part of the Institute of Geological Sciences in 1965 Shaw became head of the Overseas Division, retiring in 1968. He was awarded the OBE in 1958 and the CMG in 1963. He died on 1 November 1991.
