BGS is a recognised place of deposit under the Public Records Act 1958.

The BGS welcomes your donations from anywhere in Great Britain. The NGDC can receive information in various formats, including analogue, digital and material collections. For further information, download a Guide to the Collection of Geoscientific Records.

Intention to drill information

  • Notify BGS — A form for completion by all those drilling boreholes covered by statute or for those wishing to donate information on a voluntary basis.
  • Mining Act — A guide to the Mining Industry Act of 1926, which covers all boreholes drilled for minerals reaching a depth of more than 30 metres.
  • Water Act — A guide to the Water Resources Act 1991, which covers all drilling related to water over 15 metres.
